About enchantments in Minecraft

When enchanting items in Minecraft, the order in which you combine armor, weapons and tools with books in your anvil makes a huge difference. Each time you work on an anvil, you increase the work penalty for future workings. Once that penalty gets too high, you simply can't add any more enchantments and the anvil says "Too Expensive!". This tool helps you plan the optimal order of combining and applying books, to give you the cheapest possible cost.

About this tool

This tool assume your gear and books start with zero "work penalty". That means you have not previously combined the books (e.g. to turn two level 1 books into a single level 2 book) or worked the items or books in an anvil in any way. To create gear with the maximum possible enchantment, you cannot combine lower-level books and must start with high-level books from villager trading.

Allowing incompatible enchantments may be useful for combining protection-type enchantments (1.14 to 1.14.3pre-1) and mending/infinity (1.9 to 1.11.1).

One level per column — incompatible groups alternate like enchant-order. Why order matters · Too Expensive

What New Enchantments Were Added in Minecraft 1.21?

Density V

Fall-distance damage multiplier on smash attacks.

Breach IV

Ignores up to ~60% of armor reduction at max tier.

Wind Burst III

Launches foes upward on kill for chain combos.

Density V — Fall Damage Multiplier

Density Damage Formula: +1 Per Level Per Block Fallen

Blocks fallen +Density V ~Total dmg
5+5~12
15+15~31
30+30~62
50+50~102

Breach IV — Armor Penetration

Breach IV ≈ 60% armor bypass—best vs netherite Protection in PvP. Weak on unarmored mobs; use Sharpness swords instead there.

Wind Burst III — Knockback on Kill

Relaunch targets up to ~11 blocks on kill—chain with Density fall smashes in Trial Chambers. Can disrupt tight mob farms if misused.

Minecraft 1.21 Enchantment FAQ

What enchantments are new in Minecraft 1.21?

Density, Breach, and Wind Burst—exclusive to the mace. Older enchantments are unchanged except standard balance notes in patch logs.

How do you get Density V in Minecraft?

Trial Chamber loot and Trial Vault rewards. Librarians rarely stock mace-only books early—farm chambers first.

Is the mace better than a Netherite sword in 1.21?

For burst damage after tall falls, yes. For grounded DPS and Sweeping Edge cleaves, swords remain king.

Does Density stack with Feather Falling?

Feather Falling reduces fall damage on you—it does not remove Density bonus damage on your smash attack after you land safely.

Can you put all three new enchantments on one mace?

Wind Burst stacks with either Density or Breach. Density and Breach cannot coexist on the same mace.

Are 1.21 enchantments on Bedrock?

Yes. Maces and the three enchantments appear on Bedrock 1.21+ with the same anvil exclusivity rules.
